CHAPTER SIX: DANCERS IN HIGH FASHION

This chapter examines the relationship between concert dance and high fashion. It considers historical examples of collaborations between choreographers and haute couture designers (including Merce Cunningham’s collaboration with Rei Kawakubo) that bridge the concert stage and the fashion runway. It is shown that the standard of classical bodies realized by concert dancers and fashion models can be counterpointed by figurations or direct presentations of grotesque embodiment. Last, a brief foray into the history of fashion modeling fuels a discussion of glamour, an aesthetic property of persons contingent on particular subjective states and modes of bodily presentation.
